Collected items from the Cantlie family
Collected items from the Cantlie family : Sun Yat-sen 孫逸仙 and the East-West Bond
Rare objects and artefacts of Oriental, Oceania, maritime, military, cultural and political interest from the Cantlie Family Collection with close associations to the Chinese cultural revolutionary Sun Yat-sen (1866-1925) responsible for the overthrow of the Imperial Qing dynasty, founder and first provisional president of the early Republic of China, friend and student of Sir James and Lady Mabel Cantlie who were instrumental in his escape from kidnap by the Chinese legation in London, and godfather to Lieutenant Colonel Kenneth Cantlie who became a go-between between the British Foreign Office and the Central Chinese Government authorities and one of the first Westerners to speak to Chairman Mao Tse-Tung.
With reference to the ‘Icebreakers’ and other important cultural, trade and political figures and movements illuminating historical relations between the East and the West, this rich collection represents a kind of dynasty in itself; objects and artefacts collected over generations by Sir James (1851-1926) and Lady Mabel Cantlie (1861-1921) with further links to Sir Charles Gage-Brown being from Lady Mabel's side of the family, Lieutenant Colonel Kenneth Cantlie (1899-1986), Lieutenant General Sir Neil Cantlie (1892-1975) and Major Hugh Cantlie (1932-2025) then by descent.
